I haven't seen this yet but APPARENTLY there is a scam going around the LJ comms with a virus attached. If you see a post like the below, DO NOT CLICK THE LINKS! Apparently, it is not only infecting people, but deleting the comms as well once it takes control of someones LJ. It will delete all posts and give link to viruses and spyware.
If anyone has further info on this, or the validity of it please share.

-----------------------
Dear friends, I, as the maintainer of this community, have to inform you that due to recent tragic events, I've decided to stop using LJ as a platform for my community (and to remove everything that was posted here before). From now on, all new materials should be posted to the New community that I've recently created, as for old posts, you will find them here.

Malicious Code Targeting Social Networking Site Users

Original release date: March 4, 2009 at 11:53 am Last revised: March 4, 2009 at 11:53 am

AUCA Information Security is aware of public reports of malicious code spreading via popular social networking sites including myspace.com, facebook.com,hi5.com, friendster.com, myyearbook.com, bebo.com, and livejournal.com. The reports indicate that the malware, named Koobface, is spreading through invitations from a user's contact that include a link to view a video. If the users click on the link in this invitation, they are prompted to update Adobe Flash Player. This update is not a legitimate Adobe Flash Player update, it is malicious code.

Additionally, some of the reports indicate that there are multiple bogus Facebook applications being used to obtain users' private information.

AUCA Information Security encourages users and administrators to do the following to help mitigate the risks:
* Do not follow unsolicited links.
* Use caution when downloading and installing applications.
* Do not surf social networking sites with AUCA owned laptops and desktops.

A little OT, but I think also quite relevant.

New Zealand's new Copyright Law presumes 'Guilt Upon Accusation' and will Cut Off Internet Connections without a trial. Join the black out protest against it!

Hey everyone - new member here. :)

Just two things:

1. I'm really looking forward to the upcoming Christchurch Armageddon - it'll be my first Armageddon ever because I just moved (back) to New Zealand (from Sydney) last year! Is anyone here going? :D

2. Please, PLEASE tell me that I will be recognisable in my Firefly-verse Inara Serra costume... because I don't know how popular Firefly was/is in NZ (though the fact that both Firefly and Serenity are listed as community interests seems to be a good sign). :O

I was thinking of making a different costume, but I don't have the funding, and this one was almost finished before I moved. Plus, I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it (literally). ;)

"Next month, New Zealand is scheduled to implement Section 92 of the Copyright Amendment Act. The controversial act provides 'Guilt Upon Accusation,' which means that if a file-sharer is simply accused of copyright infringement he/she will be punished with summary Internet disconnection. Unlike most laws, this one has no appeal process and no punishment for false accusation, because they were removed after public consultation. The ISPs are up in arms and now artists are taking a stand for fair copyright."

There's a petition here : http://creativefreedom.org.nz/

Nowhere to be found on any news site, all over the web otherwise. Search 'Guilt Upon Accusation'or 'Section 92 of the Copyright Amendment Act.' It's due to come into law on the 28th of Feb.

Up until now I had only ever attended the Armageddon conventions. Over the weekend I attended my first international con - Gatecon.
I really had no idea just how lucky we all really are to have Armageddon.
Gatecon has been running for 9 years, but the level of organisation made it feel like this was its first year. Every year (that I've attended) Bill has put on an extremely well organised Armageddon event. My only grumble with Armageddon's organisation was at last years AuckGeddon when I saw many ppl miss out on photos (or autographs, I don't recall which one it was now as both took place in the same area) because they hadn't been aware tickets needed to be purchased in advance, and sales stopped after a certain time.
Gatecon was a mess. Nothing started on time, guests missed panels because they hadn't been informed of the time change, and it was hard to get a correct (or polite) answer out of a staff member. I watched ppl grow more and more frustrated because none of the staff they asked could point them in the direction of the RDA photos. Itineraries weren't handed out, and no Thursday itinerary was ever put up (so I missed the meet and greet). When I went through registration the woman failed to mention it was even on.
I've often grumbled a little about the costs of photos at Armageddon. $30 always seemed a lot, but I still went ahead and got them.
At Gatecon, the photos there cost US/Canadian$30. Keeping in mind the exhange rate, and the fact minimum wage is $8, the NZ cost doesn't seem so bad.

To attend all three days of Gatecon I forked out close to NZ$500 - just on my entry (this included a numbered seat that was 5 rows back and at no time had a clear view of the stage, entry into the con all 3 days, 1 pre-signed Richard Dean Anderson autograph, and a photo with him.
Armageddon's Silver and Gold passes are a bargain!

We're all extemely lucky in NZ when it comes to conventions. Even though I'm now enjoying a year away in Canada, I'm disappointed I'll miss the next few Armageddons.

Hey Hey, NZJ here...
I know that a lot will be going on on the weekend of Armageddon Auckland...but as my birthday was last Monday, I was going to celebrate it up there (I live in Hastings, Hawkes Bay btw)

If I were to book a place for a themed party - as my inner-child hasn't learned to keep quiet yet - would anyone be willing to come, if they had nothing else to do??

I know most people would have been cosplaying all day, but the theme I have been playing with is: Sci-fi/Historical/Steampunk. Combined or Separate I have not decided...any thoughts??

What ya'll think??

Even if ya'll have better things to do, your thoughts on the theme are welcome...

NZJ
